7 tips from a pharmacist that don’t involve medications

By Paolo Sales, Pharmacist

Through my years of practice as a community pharmacist, I have observed that a lot of people could be healthier if they employ from lifestyle changes. Before I move on though, let’s define health.

According to the World Health Organization, Health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. A lot of people have this misconception that if they don’t have high blood pressure or high cholesterol they are healthy.

These tips you have heard before but they are important enough to mention again and again and again.

First Tip: Be Physically Active

Throughout human history our bodies have not evolved as much as compared to how drastic our lifestyle has changed. A big changed that has happened through the years is a lack of daily physical activity. Sadly, the body (brain included) requires movement to keep us healthy. Please note that I use the term physically active and not exercise. Physical activity is easiest to achieve by going to the gym or participating in an exercise class but by simply committing to park further from the entrance of the grocery so that you would need to walk a little bit more or if you have a garden spending time outside daily to maintain it are good examples of daily activity. Try to commit 30-60 minutes daily of physical activity. Make physical activity varied if you can – the body easily adapts to repetitive activity. For a bigger bang for you buck, make all you physical
activity all outdoors.
